As a historian, I can tell you with 100% certainty: When a country wants to have elite soldiers, it always evolves into horse archers. Even the winged Hussars became a shooty regiment but with guns.
Ranged weapons, and especially mobile ranged weapons, are always superior to melee weapons for the same reason polearms are superior to axes or hammers, let alone swords: range. If you can kill or maim your enemy while they can’t reach you, you’ve basically already won.
And on top of that, lances are an especially awful choice for centaurs. They work for mounted soldiers because those can slide back in the saddle to mitigate the force of the impact when hitting a target, but for a centaur the entire force would be sustained by the spine, damaging or even breaking it and thus killing the centaur through its own attack.
